There are over two million new cases of skin cancer diagnosed in the U.S. each year, outnumbering all other cancers combined.  Other major health problems linked to overexposure to UV radiation are premature aging of skin, cataracts and immune system suppression.

Taking a few sensible precautions will help individuals enjoy the sun while lowering chances of sun-related
health illnesses. Check out the San Juan Basin Health Department sun-safety webpage for resources and links.

Focus on Your Drive Campaign
Memorial Day kicks off Summer Driving months in Southwest Colorado. San Juan Basin Health’s Injury Prevention Coalition is conducting a Focus on Your Drive campaign around Memorial Day to help combat distracted driving among youth and adults.

There will be print ads, radio spots and a banner at the La Plata County Fair’s Demolition Derby. For posters and other resources, visit the SJBHD website.

The Coalition also offers  free presentations for local community groups, schools and businesses. Call 335-2047 to schedule a presentation or for more information.

Jane Looney is Communications Director for SJBHD.
