Back to the News Summaries

Wednesday, August 1, come watch the Full Moon rise at the ancient surroundings of Chimney Rock Archaeological Area while listening to soothing Native American flute melodies played by Charles Martinez!  While awaiting the moon’s arrival near the Great House Pueblo site, visitors will learn about the Ancestral Puebloans, the archaeological relationship of Chimney Rock to Chaco Canyon, and archaeo-astronomy theories.

Reservations are required. Tickets are $15 for this 2-hour program designed for folks 12 years and older. Add $5 for an early tour of the lower area (Great Kiva Trail Loop), which starts at 4:45pm. The HWY 151 gate will be open from 5:45pm to 6:00pm and the program begins at 6:45pm. The moon will not be rising between the twin spires. Bring flashlights, water (also for sale at the cabin), cushions, and blankets or coats.  For tickets, call the visitor cabin at 970-883-5359, from 9:00am to 4:30pm daily.

After the Full Moon Program, guests will be given the opportunity to join us for the NEW Full Moon Viewing Program! This program begins with a lecture about The Origin and Significance of Our Only Moon by two of our great volunteers Jim Baumgardt and Jerry Granok.   After the lecture, guests will be able to view the surface of the moon with our wonderful telescopes!  Cost for this program is only $5.00.  The lecture will last approximately 45 minutes and guests will be given an hour to view the moon with the telescopes.  For tickets, call the visitor cabin at 970-883-5359, from 9:00am to 4:30pm daily or tickets may be purchased at the site.

The Full Moon Program and Full Moon Viewing Program is sponsored by The Chimney Rock Interpretive Association in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and the San Juan National Forest.
